Skills Checklist Apprenticeship Level I

 Prenatal Care:

            Give instructions for urine sample

            Read urine test strips

            Compute gestational age by LMP

            Obtain maternal temperature, pulse and weight

            Take maternal blood pressure

            Measure fundal height

            Perform Leopold’s maneuvers: identify presentation, position, attitude, variety, lie

            Obtain fetal heart rate with Fetoscope

Obtain fetal heart rate with Doppler

            Check pitting edema (+1 to +4)

            Check for diastasis recti

            Fill out prenatal forms according to supervisor’s instructions

            Understand the concept of risk assessment as an ongoing process

            Give instructions for obtaining lab work

            Know universal precautions of blood

            Check for varicosities

            Know common complaints of pregnancy and typical remedies

 

Labor:

            Know how to sterilize equipment

            Demonstrate aseptic techniques

            Make appropriate physical preparations for delivery (supplies, temperature, lighting)

            Correctly time contractions for frequency and duration; assess their strength

            Distinguish between true and prodromal labor

            Assess approximate dilation of cervix from cervical dilation models

            Demonstrate technique for immediate relief of leg cramps

            Administer an enema

            Use of maternal position change and movement to facilitate progress of labor

            Respond appropriately to maternal dehydration or ketonuria

            Recognize a full bladder and its effect on labor; assure evacuation of bladder

            Offer guidance to laboring woman with breathing, and pushing techniques

            Utilize emergency phone numbers when necessary

 

Perinatal (Birth) & Postpartum (Third and Fourth Stage)

            Clamp and cut cord

            Examine placenta, membranes and cord

            Obtain cord blood

            Administer oxygen to mom

            Do clean-up at birth

            Perform fundal massage

            Know postpartum perineal comfort measures

            Cleanse woman’s perineum using correct techniques

            Use or suggest techniques to encourage maternal urination

            Assess appropriate involution of uterus

            Promote bonding among family members with baby and help with initiation of breast feeding

            Respond to maternal nutrition and hydration needs

            Know appropriate aeptic techniques for suturing set-up

 

Newborn Care:

            Obtain newborn axillary temperature and define normal range and maintain temperature

            Assess APGAR score and chart of time of birth

            Give baby blow-by oxygen, if necessary

            Use bulb syringe and provide immediate non-emergency care of newborn

            Weigh, measure length, head and chest circumference
